Peter Jones CBE, Chairman of Enterprise UK, the business-led organisation created to increase entrepreneurship in the UK, today announces the appointment of Tom Bewick as its new Chief Executive.
Tom leaves his position as Group Chief Executive for Creative & Cultural Skills, the first sector skills council for the creative and cultural industries, which he co-founded in 2004. He starts as CEO of Enterprise UK on April 6th 2010.
Enterprise UK, which is chaired by entrepreneur and TV star, Peter Jones, was founded in 2004 by the four leading UK business membership organisations - British Chambers of Commerce, the Confederation of British Industry, the Institute of Directors and the Federation of Small Businesses – to increase enterprise and entrepreneurship in the UK. It is primarily funded by the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills.
Peter Jones commented on Tom’s appointment:
“Promoting entrepreneurship has never been more vital as entrepreneurs and their ideas have a critical role in driving the economic recovery. For many, 2009 was all about survival and, while uncertainty remains as we start 2010, one thing we can be sure of is that entrepreneurs will drive growth as downturns always force innovative and creative solutions to the top. Enterprise UK is in the best position to encourage, support and champion entrepreneurship and I’m delighted that Tom is joining us to strengthen and lead our dedicated team. Working closely with me and the EUK team, Tom will ensure Enterprise UK continues to have an increasing and positive impact on entrepreneurship in this country as we aim to do even more to encourage enterprise.”
Miles Templeman, Director General, IoD and Trustee of Enterprise UK, said
“Each year since Enterprise UK was founded it has gone from strength to strength. Today the UK’s economy faces well documented challenges. What we do know is that entrepreneurship is a crucial part to how quickly and successfully we emerge from recession. The appointment of Tom represents the next step forward in Enterprise UK’s development and its ability to forge opportunities from challenge. We look forward to working with him.”
Tom Bewick said:
“My recent personal experience of enterprise and entrepreneurship culminated in the creation of Creative & Cultural Skills and the development of industry changing initiatives has given me a real passion for all things entrepreneurial. I am really excited by this new opportunity of working closely with Peter Jones in building Enterprise UK as the leading light for the encouragement of enterprise throughout the UK. I’m keen to build on Peter’s vision of making the benefits of entrepreneurship more widely felt across society and I want the UK to be recognised as the global leader in enterprise. I thoroughly enjoyed working with a hugely passionate and committed team at Creative & Cultural Skills and I wish them all the best for the future. I’m now looking forward to joining the dynamic, ambitious and entrepreneurial team at Enterprise UK who have similarly achieved a huge amount in such a short space of time.”
